A Little Kindness Goes a Long Way

Your own soul is nourished when you are kind, but you destroy yourself when are you cruel (Book of Proverbs 11:17 New Living Translation)

“Only the weak are cruel. Gentleness can only be expected from the strong.” ~ Leo Buscaglia

I just want to share my heart a little on the subject of kindness. Nowadays there seems to be a lack of it – maybe that is because so many people are stressed out and that can make a person be only thinking of their own welfare, their own stuff. But for me, kindness is like salve to life. It’s a kind of balm that soothes both the giver and the one who is being bestowed with the kindness. It’s something that gives the giver so much even when the kindness is shown to someone who doesn’t seemingly deserve it.  Well, not that it should make a difference, but, when you are kind it returns to bless you, you “nourish your own soul.” So, it’s an added bonus to show kindness just to show kindness.

Not too long ago, while I was on a contract at a major company, one of the most interesting comments about my work was made. It surprised me that someone even noticed. One of my internal clients said, “You have brought kindness and compassion to this workplace.” The workplace that I was in was very competitive – the people were wonderful and I appreciated their talents and their work – but somehow there was a lack of genuine caring amongst them. I felt badly for them at times – even pitied them – how rare it was to see them care about one another.

Why isn’t there more kindness shown in life? Some people I believe feel that they’re not powerful or don’t have the upper hand if they extend kindness. But, to me, you can have all kinds of worldly power, a good job making great money and loads of anointing, but if you aren’t kind, then you really don’t have power. I believe the true power is in “doing” the Word of God (what is written in the Bible) and being kind is part of that. Walking in love includes being kind. You may be the brightest and most successful in your sphere and have influence as well, but kindness is something that money can’t buy. And, I believe, that it can be practiced so that by practicing kindness, the one who is practicing becomes kind.

I read somewhere that you become kind by being kind and I believe that there is some truth in that.  You may already be kind. As for me, it’s a way of life now and I want to always be on the lookout for ways to exhibit kindness… What about you?
